Announcing "HOPE", a dance collaboration

with the flatfoot dance company

By invitation from The Playhouse Company for the South African Women’s Arts Festival, Shannon Hope teams up with the Flatfoot Dance Company in August to present “Hope”, choreographed by Lliane Loots, and showcased at The Playhouse Drama Theatre in Durban.

Loots’s choreography has won her numerous national awards and international commissions and her inimitable style of weaving theatrical landscapes of film, dance, lighting and music has her considered one of South Africa’s leading voices in cutting edge dance theatre.

“HOPE” is a collaboration with the six resident FLATFOOT dancers (Sifiso Majola, Tshediso Kabulu, Sifiso Khumalo, Jabu Siphika, Julia Wilson and Thobi Mapanga) joining forces with the musical genius of Durban’s own Shannon Hope who will perform live on stage with the dancers.

Inspired by, and weaving Shannon Hope’s poignant lyrics into a contemporary dance landscape, Loots’s dance theatre work, “HOPE” is an ironic and sometimes witty encounter with the quagmire of contemporary love relationships set against Hope’s soulful blend of longing, with intelligent lyrics that lament love and heartfelt endings (and sometimes beginnings!). Shannon Hope describes her music as “heart songs” and her unfailing bravery in jumping into the quicksand of love, makes her brand of torch songs unique in their depth and resonance. This is new territory for Loots who, often known for the dissident social and political voice in her dance work, steps into a more interior and personal landscape with “HOPE”. Perhaps, in the end, Loots’s “HOPE” reminds us that our love relationships are the very fabric of our daily lives and as such become part of the deepest sense of understanding ourselves; both difficult and joyful?

Alongside Shannon Hope’s piano and voice, “HOPE” also sees Loots return to a long-time collaborative relationship with Durban-based filmmaker Karen Logan. Karen has worked with FLATFOOT over eight dance theatre works and her unique manner of creating visual landscapes for dance, has garnered a lot of recognition for both FLATFOOT and for her ongoing career as a film-maker.

“HOPE” is a creative collaboration between three of Durban’s most innovative contemporary women artists (Lliane Loots, Shannon Hope and Karen Logan) alongside the inimitable FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANY, and for the Playhouse Company’s Women’s Arts Festival 2013 is a sure fire winner; and a wonderful support of female artists living and working in South Africa.

“Hope” appears in a dance double bill alongside Christopher Kindo’s “Imvula”. Tickets are R80 (students R35), and are available through Computicket.
